SCORM packages

mAuthor offers the possibility of exporting each presentation's resources individually to a SCORM package. These packages can be later imported back to the platform in case of any emergency event. It is possible to create SCORM 2004 and SCORM 1.2 packages and while exporting your content, you may decide which version you'd like to use.

Exporting

To perform the export, select the "Export SCORM 2004/offline" or "Export SCORM 1.2/offline" (depending on the SCORM version you need) option from the drop-down menu Export in the top-right toolbar. The presentation export will run in background, and you will receive a notification email when it is completed. Click on a given link, choose a name for your file, and save it to a convenient place on your computer.

Importing

To import the lesson back to mAuthor, click on the Import option in the top-right toolbarand choose Import lesson. Select the required zip file and click on the Upload button underneath. The import will run in background, and you will receive a notification email when it is completed.

Package size

To avoid including any unwanted resources, it is a good idea to use the "Update assets" option before exporting SCORM. It helps to improve and shorten the process of creating XML files, significantly reducing the package size.
To use this function, go to the "More actions…" drop-down menu and select the "Update assets" option. All the unwanted resources will be automatically removed from a lesson. mAuthor also makes it possible to update all assets in one go in all presentations within a project. To use the one-click "Update assets" option, simply go to the "Manage projects" section and select the "Update assets" link visible under a project to be updated. Then it is necessary to tick the checkboxes next to the relevant publications. All assets in the selected publications will be updated in one go.

SCORM suspend data limit

The SCORM standard imposes the following size limits for suspend data:

  • SCORM 1.2: 4096 characters
  • SCORM 2004 3rd Edition: 64000 characters

SCORM packages created with mAuthor do not conform to these specifications as they would significantly limit the number of interactive exercises available in each package. Many Learning Management Systems allow for suspend data longer than presented default limits or through available configuration.
